Post-Impressionism appeared in France in the mid-1880s as a result of the impressionist crisis and attempts by brush masters to find visual means consonant with the new century. The post-Impressionists refused to depict a fleeting impression of reality on canvas, and sought to reveal the essence of objects and capture the lasting state of the surrounding world.
