The unfading summer sun, frozen between the dark northern sky and the low banks of the Neva, seems to slide along the edges of St. Petersburg roofs, leaden shadows descend into deep wells of courtyards, and rare rays of electric light slightly gild the peeling walls. Gray roofs, like the Neva waves, run away to the horizon, exposing their curves to the cold rays of the night luminary.
