The Naiads were nymphs-patrons of water sources on land. These sources included springs, rivers, streams, wells and fountains. Some of them were daughters of the Ocean, the river washing the earth, i.e. they were oceanids. Others were born from local river gods. Sometimes naiads were identified with rain clouds (Nephele naiads), trees (dryad naiads) and flowering meadows (Leimenid naiads).
