The philosopher Denis Diderot believed that a person contemplating a work of art is like a deaf person listening to sign language on a well-known topic. It sounds confusing, but the point is true. Finding ourselves in front of an object of art, we seem to go deaf, trying to understand at least something of what we see in front of us. Art directly reflects the artist's thoughts, hopes, moods, intuitions, experiences and feelings.
Trying to comprehend the artist's intention, we fall silent or speak in a low voice, because we feel that every day we are missing something. The artist reminds us of this. It forces us to become more honest with ourselves, to dive deeper into what we are doing. Moving towards a goal brings much more satisfaction than achieving it. We enjoy chasing the hare more than the prey itself.
