The painting depicts a street in the village of Gurzuf, which is located in Crimea. The origin of the name has not been reliably established. Some researchers believe that it comes from the Latin Ursus ‛bear’ (near the city is located “Bear Mountain” - Ayu-Dag). Others believe that the name Gorzuv (Gorzuvity) has Taurian or Goth-Alanian roots and decipher it as “gor dzakh” - ‛mountain valley’, ‛valley among the mountains’. Gradually, the toponym “Gorzuvity” was transformed into Kursaity, Gorzovium, Yurzuf, Gurzuf
