A date (or romantic rendezvous) is a prearranged meeting between two people in love; generally, a meeting of two people seeking to meet, to have a mutual relationship. In the most general sense, it is a meeting of two people who are establishing a relationship and exploring whether they are compatible for spending time together as a couple. They may or may not have sexual relations with each other.
In sociology, it is considered one of the forms of social interaction, part of the institution of courtship, the purpose of which is to evaluate each other for suitability as a partner for intimate relations or marriage. This period of courtship is sometimes considered a precursor to engagement or marriage.
