Goritsky assumption monastery was founded in the first half of the XIV century, under Ivan Kalita. Its most famous name came from the location on the hill — "Gorica". From the ancient wooden buildings have not survived anything. In 1382 Tokhtamysh's army destroyed the town of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, and with it the Goritsky monastery. Shortly before the ruin here on a pilgrimage came to the Grand Duchess Eudoxia, wife of Dmitry Donskoy. She and a few others were miraculously saved from the Tatars, floating away on a raft in the middle of the Pleshcheyevo lake and disappeared from sight behind the dense fog.
In memory of his miraculous salvation Evdokia in 1392 restored at his own expense the monastery, and in Pereslavl established tradition on the sixth Sunday after Easter to arrange a procession on boats from Goritsky monastery and the mouth of the Trubezh to the middle of the lake.
